A soldier dies in clashes with separatists in eastern Ukraine

At least one Ukrainian soldier has died in clashes in the Donbas region in the east of the country in the past few hours, the press center of the Operation Joint Forces (OFC) confirmed on Thursday.

“As a result of enemy actions, a soldier sustained injuries incompatible with life,” he said, adding that among the incidents there was an explosive attack fired from a drone near Granitni.

He added that the “occupiers” fired artillery and mortar fire near Granitni, as well as heavy machine gun fire in the direction of Luhansk and light gun fire near Novotoshkivski, the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN reported.

The Ukrainian armed forces announced in early October that they could return fire in the event of a bombing, a departure from the existing ceasefire agreement that regulates conflict with pro-Russian separatist forces in the east.

In July 2020 an attempt was made to establish a permanent ceasefire. The conflicting parties agreed to this ban. As a result, the number of ceasefire violations fell significantly over several weeks, despite violating the agreement on a daily basis.

More than a hundred people have already died this year. According to the United Nations, the fighting is responsible for more than 70 percent of civilian casualties in the separatist zone, while more than 13,000 people have died since 2014.
