The Russian Defense Ministry reported Tuesday that one soldier died and two others were injured when an improvised explosive device exploded while a convoy drove past in Deir Ezzor province in eastern Syria.
The device would have exploded when the Russian convoy passed a street on the way back to the city of the same name after doing humanitarian work, according to the Sputnik news agency.
“Three Russian soldiers were injured as a result of the detonation. One of them with the rank of general died from the severity of the injuries while they were evacuated and receiving medical attention,” the Russian government said in a statement.
Russia is a key ally of the government of Syrian President Bashar al Assad in the war that began more than nine years ago. Russian fighters began attacking rebel areas in September 2015.
