A priest known for helping migrants and the poor killed in northern Italy

Roberto Malgesini, a priest from the Diocese of Como, northern Italy, known for helping migrants, refugees and people without resources, was stabbed to death on the street by a man with mental health problems.

“This morning, Father Roberto Malgesini was killed in Como by a homeless person with mental health problems,” the Diocese of Como announced in a statement. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the 57-year-old priest was attacked at 7:00 a.m. near the San Rocco parish where he lived. The attacker is a foreign man who later reported to the Carabinieri.

According to the newspaper ‘Il Corriere della Sera’, Malgesini coordinated a group of volunteers who gave meals to people in need every day. The Bishop of Como, Monsignor Oscar Cantoni, has visited the crime scene and will hold a prayer in memory of the murdered priest in the city’s cathedral this Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
