MyAnimeList, an active online anime and manga community with an estimated 10 million North American users, is integrating cryptocurrency payments into its e-book platform.
In a December 2 press release, the blockchain platform Digital Entertainment Asset announced a partnership with MyAnimeList’s parent company Media Do, which will distribute the aforementioned DEAPcoins on the MyAnimeList platform.
The deal also provides the Media Do network’s Japanese intellectual property, which will be used for blockchain-enabled games on DEA’s PlayMining platform. This rewards DEAPcoins users who simply play or read manga comics through the service.
Earlier this year, Media Do announced that it would invest 300 million yen ($ 2.8 million) in distributed ledger technology over the next two years.
The distributor, who works with more than 2,000 publishers and 150 online bookstores, reported e-book sales up 20% year over year in April when Japan was in a state of emergency due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. .
The company said that having a reliable transaction history for its e-books would allow customers to sell used copies and return royalties to both publishers and authors.
The DEA will now contribute to the implementation of this initiative by jointly creating and managing a marketplace with non-fungible tokens or NFTs.
