A French national who worked for the NGO Agrónomos y Veterinario Sin Fronteras (AVSF) died this Tuesday after being shot several times in the village of Pacam, Quiché department, in northwestern Guatemala.
Benoit Maria, who was in the area to help the indigenous people, was found dead after the vehicle he was traveling in received more than a dozen shots, according to the Prensa Libre newspaper.
Miguel de León, indigenous mayor of Nebaj, complained about the “crime” and reminded that the 60-year-old man has been working in the Ixil region for more than twenty years. He currently lived in Quetzaltenango and was working on a project in Chisec.
The organization has condemned what happened, calling the attack a “cowardly” attack and insisting that it was a “murder”, while the French embassy in Guatemala issued a statement urging “justice to be done as soon as possible”.
