A four-month-old baby infected with COVID-19 and other conditions has died in Portugal, a country that has so far had no deaths under the age of ten in a pandemic that has resulted in 235 other cases on Portuguese territory 24 hours.
The Ministry of Health raised the provisional balance of those infected to 54,701, while the death toll rose to 1,786, two more than Tuesday. Authorities estimate there are around 12,800 active cases, of which 329 correspond to people admitted to hospitals.
Health Minister Marta Temido confirmed the baby’s death at a press conference, stressing that she had other pathologies that had made her infection worse. The girl lost her life in a hospital in Lisbon, reports the RTP chain.
The Lisbon and Tajo Valley region remains the main epicenter of the outbreak in Portugal, again focusing on more than six out of ten new cases across the country.
