A Turkish court sentenced MP Remziye Tosun, a member of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP), to ten years in prison for allegedly “membership in a terrorist organization”.
The verdict came after a trial of his arrest began four years ago during a series of security forces’ operations against the PKK. His lawyer has announced that he will appeal the judgment, as reported by the Turkish television broadcaster NTV.
Tosun is a Kurdish majority parliamentarian in Diyarbakir Province. The authorities have dismissed dozens of HDP mayors for “terrorism” in the past few months and replaced them with state officials as part of a campaign of repression against the local councils controlled by this opposition party.
Nearly 5,000 HDP members have been arrested in Turkey in the past three years, prompting the party to denounce criminalization of training activities by the authorities as well as political persecution that would have been observed after the referendum on April 16, 2017 approved constitutional reform.
