Kidnapping of a candidate for councilor in a municipality in the Mexican state of Michoacán
Interior Minister rejects that “violence tarnishes the electoral process and violates democracy”
The opposition candidate for the mayor of Moroleón in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, Alma Rosa Barragán, was shot dead in the middle of the election campaign on Tuesday.
The national coordinator of the Movimiento Ciudadano formation represented by Barragán, Clemente Castañeda, has confirmed the events in Pedro Guzmán de Moroleón Street, reports the Mexican media group “Milenio”.
In addition, two other people were injured in this “armed attack”, as denounced by the party, which “deeply regrets” the incident and has offered “solidarity and support” to the victims and their families.
According to local media, a group of armed men arrived at the location where Barragán was holding a campaign rally and opened fire on them.
A cell of the Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office will investigate the events while the leader of the civil movement has asked for justice to be guaranteed “for this brutal attack”.
The demand is directed at the government of the President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and the Governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue, of the National Action Party (PAN), so that “they should do justice and not let this crime go unpunished”.
“With the murder of the citizen’s movement candidate for the mayor of Moroleón, Guanajuato, Alma Barragán, 88 politicians were murdered” in the frame of the 2021 elections – 34 of them candidates and candidates for elected positions – denounced the communication and risk management consultancy Etellekt.
After learning the facts, Interior Minister Olga Sánchez Cordero lamented the death of the citizens’ movement candidate and called for “safe” elections.
“We condemn that violence tarnishes the electoral process and violates democracy. We must guarantee free and safe elections,” he said in a post on his Twitter profile.
