The bitcoin (BTC) craze among lawmakers has now reached the Belgian parliament, as Brussels MP Christophe De Beukelaer became the first European politician to convert his salary into bitcoin.
The Brussels MP’s monthly salary of €5,500 will be converted into Bitcoin via crypto trading platform Bit4You, Bruzz reports. Beukelaer, who represents the Humanist Democratic Center (CDH) party, hopes his move will inspire other politicians in the region to show a similar interest in the emerging technology.
Beukelaer gave the example of New York Mayor Eric Adams and how US politicians are working to turn their home state or city into a Bitcoin hub. he said:
New York City Mayor Eric Adams spent three months increasing his bitcoin content to make New York a bitcoin hub. I think it’s not too late for Brussels and Belgium to play a leading role in the cryptocurrency industry.”
Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez is another popular lawmaker known for his defense of BTC. He’s spoken quite a bit about making the city a bitcoin hub, and in addition to earning his own salary in bitcoin, he’s been working on policies to use the same option for city employees.
Not just politicians, some of the biggest names in esports have also come forward to accept BTC salaries. A total of seven NFL stars have so far opted to pay out in Bitcoin, and NBA stars such as Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala have also announced that they will accept Bitcoin salaries in the future.
The trust of sports stars coupled with a growing number of politicians wanting to get paid in BTC indicates the growing popularity of Bitcoin as an asset.
