But how do you get this magical first million? Fortunately, with the right mindset and strategy, and consistent work ethic, the million followers is a goal that almost anyone can achieve.

1. Use the right hashtags

This is by far the most important element when it comes to building a fan base. Whether on Instagram, Twitter or any other platform – hashtags are the main way that new potential followers can find your content. But what are the right hashtags?

Hashtags have to do two things: first, be relevant to your content, and second, belong to the “popular” or “trend” category. Regularly creating content with popular topics is one way to achieve this, comment on strong topics, or upload images that reflect current trends. When you review the updated analytics, you can identify the trend hashtags and try to align your content as much as possible with these topics.

However, you should avoid using irrelevant hashtags, that is, not using them to use them. Hashtags have to make sense with your content, otherwise you will disappoint and confuse the audience and miss new followers.

2. Follow and interact with other users in your niche

As you work to build your own fan base, you should follow other people with similar interests, content, and audiences. This makes you part of a community and makes it easier for your target group to find you.

If you really want to get more followers on social networks, you need to examine who your direct competition is, at least the profiles and pages that are most similar to yours, even if the competition is not an important factor for you. Interact as much as possible with the community so that your name appears in many places and arouses interest around you. Commenting on the content of your direct competition is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your profile. At some point, new users will come to you, and if your content is good, some will become followers.

3. Upload high quality content continuously

As long as you don’t upload spam to your own account or someone else’s content, you should be as active as possible. In order to show your potential followers that you have a lot of original and high quality content, your posts should be regularly and consistently interesting.

Sure, there is an element of early stage experimentation to find out what works for you and what your target audience likes, but once you master it, you should try to be consistent in format and style.

4. Upload your content at the right time

A lot of general information is available on the Internet at the “best” times for uploading content. These instructions can be very useful to start with. However, once you start gaining followers and engaging, it’s best to analyze your own account information. Your audience may have different habits and preferences than normal accounts.

Analysis tools such as Instagram Analytics for Business, which you can find in the followers section of your Instagram account, can give you the information you need to interact with your content. One of the most useful points is a timeline that shows you when your Instagram followers interact the most. From there, you can find out when is the best time to upload content, both days and times.

5. Follow the followers of your competition

Let’s say your content is in the art niche, let’s say, black and white city photography. If you haven’t done so already, you’ll find profiles similar to yours that have many followers (the followers of these accounts are clearly interested in black and white city photography, otherwise they wouldn’t follow this other profile). Now follow them.

In this way you contact your target group directly and indirectly invite them to follow you. Most likely, some of these accounts will become your followers.

6. Take traffic from other platforms

This is not an innovative technique, but people often forget to take advantage of it. Even if your priority is a platform, there’s no reason not to use other places to direct traffic to your profile.

Suppose your priority platform is Instagram. So links to your Instagram profile should be everywhere, including other social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and even LinkedIn, and on your website, if you have one (you should have it).

Hopefully you’ve done the hard work creating a unique, relevant, and interesting hashtag. Make it a brand now! Of course, you’ll need to share it across all of your social networks (see the previous paragraph), but keep in mind that you can even use your hashtag for offline marketing. This is particularly useful if you run a small business. Include your hashtag in all promotional materials, from posters to business cards.

If you’re an aspiring influencer without an existing company, you can get it going with a little creativity. For example, you can send to create well-designed and interesting business cards, or print a poster that includes your hashtag, of course, and make sure you give it to someone who might be interested in your content.
