The Japanese prefecture of Okinawa in southern Japan has reported 61 cases of corona viruses related to U.S. bases on the island.
Up to 38 of them were discovered at Futenma Air Base and 23 more at Camp Hansen Base. According to the Japanese television broadcaster NHK, 16 previously confirmed cases are added to these facilities.
The Marine Corps reported two outbreaks this Saturday that were detected this week, stating that it restricted inbound and outbound traffic at both bases, but did not provide more specific data.
Okinawa’s governor, Tamaki Denny, expressed concern at the presence of so many US base cases on Saturday and questioned the preventive measures taken by these facilities.
Japan has confirmed 20,719 new disease cases and 982 deaths so far.
