May 22, 2020

The services of the Greek coast guard rescued 51 migrants this Friday, including several children whose boat had sunk just a few meters off the coast of the island of Lesbos, according to the state radio station North Aegean.

The rescued, the newspaper said, had left the Turkish coast early in the morning and were all quarantined after the containment regulations against the country’s reported coronavirus epidemic had been met.

The same procedure was applied to 16 other migrants who had previously arrived on the south coast of the island.

The Greek authorities reported 173 arrivals on the island during May that were quiet compared to previous years and the beginning of the year, especially since Greece completely closed its borders after the deadly virus appeared.
