The death toll from the attacks by suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militia against several villages in Ituri province in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) on Wednesday at dawn has risen to 30, according to authorities reported.
The militiamen stormed the villages of Belou and Bulilia in Banyali-Tchabi district early in the morning of September 9. Although nine deaths were initially reported, more bodies have been found in the area in the past few hours.
The president of the Nyali community stated in statements to the Congolese radio station Radio Okapi that the attackers also kidnapped many people, including children. It was also detailed that the victims were shot with machetes.
Irumi Civil Society President Gili Gotabo has stated that some of the victims were beheaded before explaining that the murders took place in an area where the security forces are not present. nor from the United Nations Mission in the Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
