Indian police reported Friday that they had arrested nearly thirty people allegedly linked to the rape of a 15-year-old teenager who was allegedly sexually abused in a group for nine months.
According to the newspaper “The Hindustan Times”.
The special team was set up to investigate the rapes that began in January, the minor has reported. The alarm went off Thursday after the teenager told a relative what had happened.
Dattatraya Karale, a senior police officer, said the rapes began after the minor’s friend raped her and filmed the attack. He and his friends later used the video to blackmail them and maintain relationships with them.
The rapes took place in different areas of Thane County, including Dombivili, Badlapur, Murbad and Rabale. Various media have indicated that the minor identified 33 suspects.
Despite the adoption of more restrictive anti-rape laws, there have been more than 28,000 rape cases in the country since 2020, according to government data.
