If you are tired of your work, it may seem that there are only two steps to become an entrepreneur. The first is to quit your job, and the second, start a company. Truth? Although making the transition from employee to entrepreneur is possible, it is much more complex than that.
These are the 12 steps you must follow to become your own boss.
1. Determine what you would like to do
Some people call this finding your passion, but it is more than that. Think about your skills, your abilities and your experience; Be realistic and contemplate what you imagine doing for several hours a day, for several weeks and years.
2. Think about whether others will pay for it
A viable business is the intersection between what you want to do and what others will pay. Do you remember the “Jump to conclusions” mat of the Office Space movie? Todd loved to build it, but the reality is that nobody was going to buy it . It was not a viable business opportunity.
3. Interview with ideal clients
Find some people that you think would be your ideal clients. Ask them about their needs, fears and aspirations related to the business idea you have. Are the benefits of your product or service in tune with your real needs? Also, take note of the words they use, as they will make your marketing plan more authentic.
4. Design a marketing and business plan
Today's marketing consists of content creation, social media management and sending emails, among other things. Make sure you know how you will approach these alternatives to present your idea to customers. At the same time, design a business plan that details how you intend to make your business work. It does not need to be too formal, but it is important that it covers your operational structure, product, distribution systems and expansion plans.
5. Establish your small-scale business
If possible, test your company's idea by launching it on a small scale, while continuing with your office work. This will give you a risk-free opportunity to test your ideas, get your first clients and see if the business will be sustained over time before leaving the security of your current job.
6. Evaluate the feedback and make adjustments
Starting a small-scale operation will help you determine which parts of your idea are good, and which ones need adjustment. Take your customers' comments seriously and make all the necessary changes before you start climbing.
7. Build a team
If your idea seems viable, think about who you would like to be part of your leading team when you dedicate yourself to your full time business. Depending on your personal experience , you may need help in areas such as finance, marketing, customer service and production.
8. Secure financing
For a small business, this could mean saving some money to survive the first months. If your aspirations are a little bigger, you might have to think about how to get venture capital or some external investment.
9. Define the structure of your company
At the same time, you must decide what type of structure your company will have to register it. Do you want to create a public limited company? An association? Carefully define the investment roles of each of the members of your leading team and plan it in legal terms.
When you feel ready, leave your office job. This could be a great relief after the huge workload you've had, but trust me: more work awaits you. Even if it's tempting, make sure you don't burn any bridges when you leave – you never know when you'll meet former bosses or co-workers, and you might have to work with them in the future.
11. Establish a work budget
Dedicated full time to your business, set a company budget. This should include marketing expenses, salaries and other important acquisitions. Be careful not to lose money on frivolous expenses!
12. Scale your business according to a business plan
Finally, it only remains to work on the plans you have carefully drawn. Of course, these plans can change over time as you encounter obstacles and overcome them. But you will be on the other side: you will be a done and right entrepreneur.
